UPCOMING ACTIVITIES 0

Dear Friends,

Tonight the Jewish people will be celebrating the Holiday of Sukkot. Many families will be on vacation for almost a week and there are many activities to choose from all around the country.

Women in Green urge all of you to be part of a most exciting project, crucial in those difficult times when the Olmert government is trying to give away large parts of our homeland to the Arab enemy: the creation of five new communities in Judea and Samaria to take place simultaneously on Sunday, Chol Hamoed Sukkot, September 30th.

Below you will find details about it. In addition, the Chomesh committee is organizing a mass aliya to Chomesh on Tuesday October 2nd. There, too, we urge you to go.

Now is the time to show loyalty to the Land of Israel!

Chag sameach!!

Ruth and Nadia Matar

ARRESTED! Crime: Love of Land of Israel 0

Dear Friends,

Michal and I were released from jail yesterday, Thursday, at 5:00pm after we had been arrested the night before. Below is a description of what happened to us after we were arrested.

ARRESTED! Crime: Love of Land of Israel
by Nadia Matar
At the end of our Women in Green vigil, when most people had already gone home, I stayed with some 15 friends and activists who were going to help Anita and myself put back the placards and the flags into my car. Starting to walk to my car, friends saw policemen coming closer and closer to me. They immediately realized the police was trying to get me but were waiting for the supporters to leave. I am still moved to tears thinking about those wonderful friends who immediately surrounded me to protect me and said: we are not leaving before we make sure you are OK. A heavyset policeman told me: Nadia, I demand you join me at the police station. I asked him why: What did I do wrong? He answered: That we will discuss later. I order you to come with me to the police station, otherwise we will take you by force. I told him I wanted to call a lawyer to discuss what my rights are.

I walked back to Paris square, surrounded by my friends, sat down on the stone bench and started calling Honenu- all the time surrounded by wonderful friends and supporters. There I was, sitting on the stone bench, discussing the issue with the lawyer, surrounded by friends - but the police obviously had no patience to wait till I finish my phone call. I heard him shout: Nadia, come with me right now otherwise you will be responsible for the violence that will happen here! Immediately after saying that, policemen started violently beating the women who were surrounding me to push their way through to get me. It was unbearable to see how they had no qualms beating and hitting older women and men. When they reached me they grabbed my arms and my legs, lifted me up like a sack of potatoes, shlepped me to the van in the most immodest way and threw me in the van. Being a religious woman I cover my head with a cap. In this violent commotion, my cap fell off so when I was in the van I raised myself, stuck my head out of the van and demanded to get my cap back. The policeman who was the driver barked at me saying: sit down right now. Another policewoman shouted: sit down right now or I will close the door on your head. I told them: I will not sit down till you give me my hat. To no avail.

The driver policeman, whose name I found out later is Avi Nissan #1114214, then grabbed my right wrist and twisted it in the most painful and violent way. The pain shot through my body. I was unable to stand and was thrown down on the seat-the door of the van shut. Then Michal Shofet, longtime Women in Green activist was pushed into the van too. I asked her why they arrested her. She told me that she was outside and witnessed the most brutal police behavior. When she saw that one woman had been pushed to the floor and looked as if she was fainting, she started shouting at the policeman demanding he stop hitting. That is when he grabbed her and pushed her into the van.She said that her arm was really hurting. When I told her how upset was that I had no head covering, she gave me her orange scarf.

We arrived at the Moriah Police Station around 9:30 pm. We were put in a large room with a table and asked to wait. The policemen who had all been involved in our arrest sat down and started writing their version of what happened. It was unbelievable to see how they were talking to each other-obviously coordinating what they were going to write. It took them close to an hour and a half to write. Meanwhile some ten supporters had arrived at the police station and were giving us support from outside. Once again, I want to thank them. At some point a lawyer sent by Honenu arrived. It was Ephraim Katzir. Boy were we happy to see him! He was allowed to speak to us only for a few minutes. He told us that the police had decided we had to spend the night in jail and go to court the following day.

At around midnight Michal was taken in for questioning. My turn came around one in the morning. The officer called Avi Sutto, told me I was accused of:

1)”going wild after the order of dispersion” was given
2) participation in an illegal gathering
3) attacking policemen
4) disturbing policemen on duty
5) incitement to violence
6) blocking roads and blocking traffic

I asked him how come the list of lies and fabrications was so short. Maybe he wanted to add to the list: “accused of the murder of Jesus and Yitzhak Rabin? If you are already lying, make it a bit more interesting.” I told him. He did not like the fact that I was not fazed nor scared by his ridiculous questions, most of which I refused to answer saying that this was a political arrest and I wasn’t going to lend a hand to this circus. I was accusing them of harassment, persecution, stifling dissent, police violence, etc.

When he asked what I had said and that I was accused of “incitement to violence’, I decided to give this man a bit of Jewish history. I took out of my bag the Jerusalem post ad Women in Green had published that morning and started reading the entire quote of Ben Gurion. He did not like the fact that he had to write so much but I told him you asked me what I said. This is what I said. Are you trying to tell me that Ben Gurion’s words are incitement?

Then, a little before two in the morning he said: ok, now we will finish the interrogation by taking your fingerprints and a DNA sample. I told him that there was no way I was going to accept that. He told me that it is the law and that if I refused he would do it by force. I told him I demanded to call Honenu. I called Honenu (who have a advisor on call 24 hours a day - what a wonderful organization!) The advisor on call told me that if it was important for me to refuse to this demand, I should say that if the next day the judge would obligate me to do so, I would, but at this moment I refuse to give my fingerprints and the DNA. When I told that to the policeman he went wild. He started shouting that I was chutzpadik (impertinent), that I was receiving bad counseling and that he was going to grab my hand by force and get my fingerprints. I put my hands behind my back and told him that I did not care how much he was shouting, I was not going to give him my fingerprints.

At this point he called another policeman who took over the interrogation. This was a higher ranking officer by the name of Tommy Zaken. He was more of a mentsh and was more bothered by the fact that some prisoners had escaped. He was constantly on the walkie-talkie giving instructions to his guys what to do to catch the fugitives. He decided to let go of the fingerprints and told me that now they were going to bring Michal and me to the Russian Compound to spend the night. In the morning we would be brought in front of a judge who would decide whether to release us or whether to keep us in jail.

Having spent the night in jail at the Russian Compound many years ago, during the Rabin-Peres regime, I must say that the place has not changed much, unfortunately. The only difference is that they seem to have painted the walls since then and the traces of feces on the wall that were there years ago, have more or less been taken away. Now the walls are full of graffiti mostly in Arabic. There are also slogans in Hebrew to remind us that many activists against the expulsion of Gush Katif have paid a visit to that jail. Each prisoner gets a tooth brush, toothpaste, a bar of soap. Then we had to give our valuable personal belongings (money, Visa Card, cellphone, etc.) to be put in the safe. After we were frisked to make sure we did not hide a cellphone or weapon somewhere in our body! we were brought to a doctor who asked if we had anything to complain about. I told them my hand had been twisted and Michal, who was in terrible pain and her arm was fire red, asked to receive pain killers. Then we were brought to our cell. I asked if we could get a room with a view but somehow we did not get that.:) There are no windows in the cell.

The cell is tiny. Two stone bunk beds are the only “furniture”. There is no place to really stand. One must stay in his bed. Behind a door is a toilet, sink and a shower. The officer had told us that cameras were filming the cell but not the toilet .The main problem with the cell was that there was no air. It was just suffocating. We each got a mattress and two blankets. A Jewish woman in her fifties was in the cell. She did not talk much. The strong light stayed on the entire night making it impossible to sleep. Luckily, they allowed me to take my siddur (prayer book) into the cell.

Trying to fall asleep, all I was thinking about was Jonathan Pollard. Here I had been in jail just for a few hours and I was already getting restless and bored and felt like walking the walls. How could Jonathan bear it? Twenty two years in jail. Twenty two years. Day and night. Day and night. And whatever conditions we were in, were probably luxury conditions compared to what Jonathan has. And despite all that, Jonathan stays upbeat. Full of optimism and love of the Land of Israel - giving us strength. I promised myself that the moment I would get out I would remind everyone to act on behalf of Jonathan’s release, to pray for his health, and to do whatever we can to bring Jonathan home.

In the morning we received three slices of bread, a hard boiled egg, a spoonful of white cheese and half a yellow pepper. Michal and I could not eat for we simply had no air. We asked if they would let us have some air in the courtyard. Luckily they agreed and we spent from 8 in the morning till 12;30 noon in the courtyard, enjoying the fresh air. Never have I spent time thinking about the fact that we have to appreciate every day we can enjoy the fresh air of freedom. At 12:30 noon we received a plate with what they called ‘lunch”. Two slices of bread, two potatoes dripping in some disgusting looking sauce, some zucchini in another horrendous sauce and an apple. I decided to play it safe. I ate the apple.

At 12:45 they opened the door and told us we were going to court. They put handcuffs on us. I asked them, if you already treat us like criminals, why not put us in leg irons? The policeman lowered his eyes in embarrassment and said that this is what he was told to do.

Arriving at the courthouse we were welcomed warmly by many of our dear and loyal family members, friends and supporters who had been waiting in court since 10:30 in the morning because they were told by the police that we had to appear at 10:30. No doubt in our mind that they kept postponing the hearing hoping our supporters would leave, but no, our Women in Green friends are like family and they stayed till we arrived.

Appearing before Judge Amnon Cohen, the police asked to release us on condition that we would not be allowed to approach Paris Square, the PM’s residence or any government ministry in the country for the next six months. In addition, they demanded I give a DNA sample and fingerprints. Michal was asked to give all her fingerprints even though during the investigation she had already given one fingerprint.

Our lawyer Ephraim Katzir gave a moving and powerful talk explaining that this was a case of political persecution and that the judge could not give a hand to this crushing of dissent. No doubt that Katzir’s talk influenced the judge who gave his ruling:

I rule to free Nadia and Michal without any condition. I do obligate them to give their fingerprints, and Nadia has to, in addition, give a DNA sample. It was explained to me that giving a DNA sample was basically taking some spit from my mouth. I told my friends that I would have no problem to spit on the police, especially if this was ordered by the court! In the end the way they take your spit is by giving you a stick with cotton on it. I had to put the stick in my mouth for a few minutes and then they put it in a plastic bag and send it to the lab. Until now, nobody explained to me why they need my DNA. I doubt they want to clone me.

They also took Michal’s and my fingerprints. We both wrote on the page that we were doing this only because the judge had obligated us to do so, but we still wanted to make clear that this was being done against our will.

We all felt very uplifted. Our lawyer had succeeded in convincing the judge not to agree to the Bolshevik demand by the police to stop our right to demonstrate in front of government ministries.

We went back to jail to get our belongings and then went for a drink and a bite with some of our loyal family members and friends who had stayed outside the court from the morning till our release at 5:00pm in the afternoon, among them my dear co-chair and mother-in-law Ruth Matar.

To sum up the 24 hours that had passed, it is clear to us that the police has received instructions from above to scare us and silence us. The Olmert government is very upset that we are raising our heads and are already now screaming gevalt against the secret agreement being concocted between Olmert and Abbas. We are convinced that the powerful ad against Condoleezza Rice and Ehud Olmert that Women in Green put in the front page of the Jerusalem Post that morning really upset them. In addition, we had a successful demonstration with, despite the very last minute announcement, some 200 people participating. Not “loving” demonstrations like the Yesha Council used to organize in coordination with the police, but rather a spontaneous demonstration with strong and powerful placards, whistles, shofar blowing and fiery and emotional speeches by public figures including Attorney Elyakim Haetzni, Attorney Daphna Netanyahu and others who made it clear that the people of Israel will not sit by quietly when our leaders are planning our destruction.

The Olmert Government has no mandate to give away the Land of Israel. The creation of a PLO state in Judea and Samaria  and the division of Jerusalem, with the handing over of the Temple Mount to the PLO will endanger the very existence of the State of Israel. At our demonstration we made it clear that we will do everything in our power to prevent this from happening. We also called upon all to come and participate in our next project together with the action committees, the Loyalist of Eretz Israel and the Youth of Eretz Israel - the founding of five new communities in Judea and Samaria, please G-d on Sunday, Chol Hamoed Sukkot, September 30th. Details will be posted after Yom Kippur.

We want to wish all lovers of Israel a Gmar Chatima Tova (May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life).
May Hashem give us strength to fight our internal and external enemies and protect the Land of Israel,
the People of Israel and the Torah of Israel.

I want to thank all our dear family members, friends and supporters who came and gave us chizuk (strength). You guys are great. A special thanks to Honenu and Attorney Ephraim Katzir.

One thing is for sure. If the Olmert government thinks they scared us with their violent Bolshevik behavior, the exact opposite is the truth. We realize that we have touched a sensitive nerve. No arrests nor beatings will stop us. We will continue to fight for the Land, the People and the Torah of Israel. And if it is a crime to love the Land of Israel, then it is our honor to be arrested for such a “crime”!!

With Love of Israel,

Nadia Matar

____________________________________________________________

Letter from Ruth and Nadia Matar (Women in Green)
Monday, September 10, 2007
Dear Friends of Israel,

We go to the synagogue on Rosh HaShanah to pray to G-d for a good year. When we hear the Shofar blowing, most of us will think about personal repentance. However, in Jewish history the Shofar was also blown to warn and alert us about an upcoming threat and danger to the Jewish people.

Recent dramatic developments in Israel still mostly deliberately hidden from the public are urgent reasons to sound the Shofar alarm. According to confirmed leaks in the media, the Olmert government plans to attend US President Bush’s November Mid-East conference in Washington DC. Olmert is, no doubt, willing to agree to the creation of a terrorist Arab Muslim state carved out of Judea and Samaria, the Biblical Heartland of Israel. This will surrender to the Arab enemy all of Judea and Samaria and half of Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount. The creation of such an entity will endanger the very existence of the State of Israel.

Before the Oslo Agreements and the Disengagement plans were divulged to the public, most people refused to believe the leaks in the media, only to wake up to the fact that our leaders had betrayed us. This time we cannot sit by idly and wait. We must already now act and do all we can to prevent this disastrous evil decree.

Friends of Israel abroad, bewildered by the recent continuous leaks in the media, often send us e-mails asking us why the people in Israel are not taking to the streets? Why aren’t there mass demonstrations? Why this silence?

We must, once and for all, address this pertinent question. It is important that we remember that after the signing of the Oslo Accords we held many demonstrations, large and small. There wasn’t a week without a vigil or demonstration, and Women in Green certainly played a leading part. Women in Green members and others were often arrested and jailed during such demonstrations. Despite the fact that the Rabin government was trying to violently crush dissent and to silence the opposition, people were not scared, and came out in masses. People were hopeful that the demonstrations would bring down the government, and that a new Government would completely detach itself from the Oslo Accord policies of capitulation and concessions to the Arab enemy.

Unfortunately, that is not what happened. Despite the change of governments, the policy of withdrawal and concessions to the Arabs continued. Ariel Sharon’s betrayal and turnabout was the final straw. Israel had become a “democratic dictatorship”, i.e. a country that pretends to be a democracy, but really is ruled by one or a few persons, regardless of the will of the public. People started asking themselves what is the point of demonstrating when the government in any case, completely disregards the wish of the people. Even large-scale demonstrations of hundreds of thousands of demonstrators had no effect whatsoever!

In such a situation, the only way to oppose the implementation of the government’s decrees of expulsion of Jews from their homes is by mass civil disobedience and by soldiers refusing the order to uproot. Unfortunately, not enough people understood this before the expulsion from Gush Katif and Northern Shomron actually took place. It was a pity that many rabbis and public leaders, who were of the opinion that the State can do no wrong, bitterly opposed civil disobedience and refusal of orders.

And thus it happened that since the Expulsion, most people, even in the national camp, feel very helpless with regard to the political situation, and deliberately detach themselves from reality. They avoid listening to the news and are more and more focused in their private lives. They passively just hope for the best.

Today, with the city of Sderot being bombarded daily with Kassams launched from Gaza, turned into Hamastan after the Expulsion, most Israelis realize the dangers of capitulation to the Arabs. There is no doubt that a large majority of the Jews in Israel oppose the creation of a PLO State in Judea and Samaria. Women in Green have gathered over 350,000 signatures against the creation of such a state! We are sure that today, the dangers of such a state have become that much clearer to the Israeli electorate.

So now the question is: what can be done to wake up the people who have no faith in the power of demonstrating any more? How can we lead them to rise against the upcoming decrees that the Olmert government is formulating together with the internal and external enemies of Israel.

Women in Green believe that the answer lies in the hands of the prospective victims of the Olmert government’s plans, i.e. the Jews of Judea and Samaria. If the Jews in Judea and Samaria will show that this time they will fiercely resist any expulsion from their homes, if they will show steadfastness and loyalty to the Land of Israel, this will, please G-d, help rekindle the patriotic spirit of all the people in Israel.

We believe, therefore, that the most important thing to do now is exactly the opposite of what the overnment would like us to do: we must focus our struggle on Judea and Samaria. The Olmert government is trying to strangle the Jews there by building walls and fences around the Jewish communities? We will go beyond these fences and instead build NEW homes. The government wants us to stop building and even plans to destroy our communities ? We will defy those decrees by building NEW communities on hills the government plans to abandon.

Olmert must not be allowed to ignore the words of our first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion: “No Jew is at liberty to surrender the right of the Jewish Nation and the Land of Israel to exist. No Jewish body is sanctioned to do so. No Jew alive today has the authority to yield any piece of land whatsoever. This right is preserved by the Jewish people throughout the generations and cannot be forfeited under any circumstance. Even if at some given time there will be those who declare that they are relinquishing this right, they have neither the power nor the jurisdiction to negate it for future generations to come. The Jewish Nation is neither obligated by nor responsible for any waiver such as this. Our right to this land, in its entirety, is steadfast inalienable and eternal. And until the coming of the Great Redemption, we shall never yield this historic right.” Speech to the 21st Zionist congress, Basel, 1937.

Women in Green are therefore proud to announce that, together with the Action Committees of Judea and Samaria and the Youth of Eretz Yisrael organization, we plan on creating five new communities throughout Judea and Samaria, starting this upcoming holiday of Succot, September 30th, 2007. These new communities will, please G-d, be built next to Efrat, Kedumim, Kiryat Arba, Elon Moreh and Chashmonaim. We already have a list of families who want to be part of this plan.

This campaign is a continuation of what was started this past summer. The thousands of people who went up to Chomesh declared: we do not accept the fact that the government gave away parts of the land of Israel and thus we will do all we can to go back to those places and rebuild Jewish life. Then, in addition to Chomesh, we went up to the Eitam. The thousands of people who walked up to the Eitam Hill next to Efrat, in the first stage of renewing the Zionist enterprise of settling the Land of Israel declared: not only will we go back to the places that the government has abandoned (like Chomesh) but we will also fight for the places that the government is trying to abandon now and give to the Arab enemy.

At that time the authorities were not able to stop the multitudes of Jews walking up to the hill. Only many hours later did they succeed in forcefully bringing down the people. Despite the fact that we were brought down, this was certainly a first success because it brought a much needed renewed spirit to the National Camp! A spirit of loyalty to the land. A spirit of defying and not fearing the authorities. A spirit of struggle. The spirit that was so lacking before and during the expulsion from Gush Katif and Northern Shomron.

We are now increasing our efforts. We plan to simultaneously begin populating five new hills.  For this grandiose operation to succeed, we  require the participation of lots of people from all over Israel.

That means we need to do a lot of publicity, which costs a great amount of money. We need to organize complicated logistics: busses to transport people, building materials for the new homes, generators, provisions for the new settlers, sanitary facilities such as chemical toilets, and above all, suitable security arrangements.

All this will cost a lot of money!

Women in Green, therefore, turn to you and urge you to help us financially. We are trying to collect the sum of $100,000 as soon as we can. Part of that sum is meant for “Hasbara” explaining to the public what we are doing and why. An example of such Hasbara is the article by Ariel Sharon written in 1994 and printed by Women in Green on the front page of the Jerusalem Post.

It is a given that the Olmert government will try to brutally crush this new endeavor. We promise you that we will do our utmost to fight any attempt to deprive us of the right to settle on our G-d-given Land. This is not a one-time effort for the TV cameras! We will go up again and again until we have achieved our goals.

When the People of Israel will see that the Jews in Judea and Samaria are once again raising their heads, and this time are ready to uncompromisingly fight for Eretz Yisrael, then, please G-d, the rest of the country will wake up to action, too.

We wish you a wonderful New Year! May you be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life. May the New Year bring to you and your family a shower of happiness, good health and prosperity! May it be a year of blessings for Eretz Yisrael and Am Yisrael. May we be victorious over our internal and external enemies.

DEAR CANDIDATE: WHAT ABOUT ISRAEL? 0

See the Real Israel with Women in Green - More details below
____________________________________________________________

Letter from Ruth Matar (Women in Green) Jerusalem
Thursday, September 6, 2007
Dear Friends,

Last night, or rather in the middle of the night, Israeli time, I watched the fifth debate of the U.S. Republican Presidential candidates, which was held in New Hampshire. The debate was hosted by FOX News TV Channel.

Eight announced candidates participated in the debate: Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Senator John McCain, Senator Sam Brownback, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Representative Tom Tancredo, Representative Duncan Hunter and Representative Ron Paul.

Most of the questions asked of the candidates were about the war in Iraq and about the various problems posed by illegal immigration in the US.

As I hold dual American-Israeli citizenship, I kept hoping that some questions would be directed at the presidential candidates regarding the future of Israel. I stayed up all night, only to be disappointed. Not a word about Israel!

It occurred to me that it would be most interesting to those of us who are vitally concerned with Israel’s future, to learn where each of these candidates stands on the topic of Israel.

For instance, how does each of them feel about President Bush’s plan to carve a Muslim terrorist state out of Judea and Samaria, the Biblical Heartland of Israel?

In truth, if President George W. Bush had revealed his true feelings about Israel during the elections of 2000 or 2004, I certainly would not have voted for him on either occasion. I most certainly would not have worked so intensely to bring out the American absentee vote in Israel for his benefit on my weekly English radio program on Israel National News, or in my weekly articles.

I often get e-mails asking me whether I regret helping bringing George W. Bush to power.

It wasn’t that I wasn’t forewarned. Some of my friends kept telling me how the whole Bush family was in bed with Saudi Arabia and other Arab Nations. How his father, George Herbert Walker Bush chose James Baker (of “F__ck the Jews”) as Secretary of State. How his close friend, Condoleezza Rice is the only woman, at least to my knowledge, who has had an Arab oil tanker named in her honor.

However, many knowledgeable people convinced me that in spite of his family’s background, George W. Bush was a real friend of the Jews.

How can we attempt to avoid such a grievous mistake in the upcoming election?
Let us ask the current Republican Presidential candidates what their policy on the Jewish State of Israel would be, were they elected President of the United States.

Dear Sir,

I am very interested in your candidacy and would like to know what your attitude is towards the Jewish State of Israel. Are you for the creation of a Muslim Palestinian State on Jewish land?

I would appreciate a written answer as to your official stand, so that I can share it with my friends and relatives.

My address is…

Sincerely,

I would be most interested in learning about any answers you receive from these candidates.
