Judaism Isn’t Just Shabbat Candles and Tefilin 0

Nadia Matar
This past Tuesday, our movement, Women in Green, renewed the vigils at road junctions. It was clear to all of us that, in light of the statements by the Prime Minister and his cronies, concerning the planned continued handing over of parts of Eretz Israel to the enemy, the destruction of the settlement enterprise, and the establishment of a Palestinazi state in Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem, we must all take to the streets and at least begin to protest. To the cynics among us who ask: Once again to go back to the streets and hold signs? What good will this do? We did this before the expulsion, and of what use was it? I want to reply: the more protests, outcry, and demonstrations in the coming weeks, the more we will succeed in heating up the atmosphere, and only then will we be better able to organize the Israeli public for demonstrations and actions of another type, that were so sorely lacking in the struggle to save Gush Katif and Northern Samaria.

We were about fifteen people. We stood in Paris Square, near the Prime Minister’s Residence. We held signs, and we distributed stickers with the messages: “Olmert is dangerous for the Jews,” “No to the partition of Eretz Israel,” “No to a Perestinian state” (referring to Shimon Peres), and “The Land of Israel for the people of Israel.” To our surprise, we were greeted on the street with enthusiasm and sympathy that we had at all not anticipated. Except for a few lone leftists, the positive responses of those going past, both pedestrians and drivers, religious and a great many nonreligious, were far beyond what we had expected. The stickers, that we had taken from the attic - which we didn’t know if they would be of any interest to the public - went like hotcakes. Instead of indifference, we felt a thirst on the street for the messages that we broadcasted, especially for the message that the Land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel. Once again, we received proof that the issue of Eretz Yisrael connects all parts of the people, religious and nonreligious, the young and not so young, new immigrants and those born in Israel. Once again we were reminded that at a time when “our leaders” talk of handing over parts of Eretz Yisrael to the enemy, it is imperative to strengthen the subject of our right to Eretz Yisrael, among all sectors of the people.

My shock and disappointment therefore knew no bounds when I read the article by Roi Sharon, that appeared in NRG Maariv, with the following headline: “Meahazim [outpost settlements] Are Out, Repentance Is In” (NRG, October 9, 2007), in which it was written:

A revolution in religious Zionism: bringing back to religion is more important than settling the land. […] For long years the leaders of religious Zionism championed the missions of building settlements and the struggle against the evacuation of settlements, with the commandment of settling Eretz Israel proudly standing at the top of the values for which the youth was educated. But 60 years after the establishment of the State of Israel, it seems that this public has decided to change the movement’s agenda, and to point to a new goal.

Last Shabbat hundreds of activists gathered in the settlement of Ofrah, and heard lectures by the head of the Ateret Kohanim yeshivah Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, the rabbi of Safed Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, and MK Effi Eitam. The three called upon religious young people to assault the Israeli street and bring the secular back to religion. This is a real precedent in the annals of religious Zionism, that until now refrained from engaging in efforts to effect repentance, at least openly […] Avihai Boaren, the Director-General of the Maayanei Yeshuah movement, also stated outright that causing people to return to religion precedes the settlement of the land. “As of right now, the struggle for Eretz Israel is secondary in importance,” Boaren said.

I did not personally participate in the conference, and I did not hear the speeches. It is well-known that journalists often distort matters, and therefore we should take care regarding such articles. From private conversations, however, with many youth on this subject, they tell me that this really is the new trend among our public. In the ulpanot (girl’s seminaries) and yeshivot the teachers hardly speak of Eretz Yisrael, of the need to settle it, to conquer it, to liberate it, and to defend it, but rather of the need to draw our brethren in Tel Aviv closer to Judaism.

I am not a rabbi, and so I cannot and do not want to answer on the halakhic level (even though one does not have to be a rabbi to be aware of the saying that “Eretz Yisrael is the equivalent of all the commandments”). I expect, and assume, that other rabbis will respond to this article on the halakhic level. But even though I am just a simple Jew, it is clear to me that there is a great error that might lead to great danger. Don’t understand me incorrectly: as someone who herself became religious even before I graduated from high school, I do not, Heaven forbid, rule out the idea of causing people to become religious. But I vigorously oppose educating our youth as if at present this is the national mission, that takes precedence over the settlement of the land. It is inconceivable that our public will all of a sudden educate its children to bring others back to religion, manning stands on the street to distribute Shabbat candles and to have people put on tefilin. This activity regarding the individual’s spiritual needs can also be done in the Diaspora, among the Jewish community in New York or in Poland.

But, however, the way I personally understand this, the Eretz Yisrael loyalist public’s contribution always consisted of imparting the awareness that Judaism is not only a religion, Judaism is not only Shabbat candles and tefilin. Rather, Judaism is also, and mainly, Jewish sovereignty, settlement, and independence in all parts of Eretz Yisrael, and Eretz Yisrael is the nexus of the world. The people of Israel must return to the Land of Israel, take possession of it, build in it, and settle in it. All the rest ensues from the power of Eretz Yisrael, because only sovereign and full Jewish rule in Eretz Yisrael will make possible the founding of a Jewish society in accordance with the Torah, a society that will be a light to the nations, and especially, a light to the Jews. Obviously, with G-d’s help, after we dwell secure in all parts of Eretz Yisrael, we will be able to turn to important social and other missions. But we are still distant from such a situation.

Professor Ruth Wisse, a professor of Yiddish, wrote an interesting book, Jews and Power. Wisse tells how the history of the Jewish people is actually divided into two parts. The first, and relatively short, part preceded the destruction of the Second Temple, when we enjoyed a certain degree of sovereignty or autonomy in Eretz Yisrael. The second part, which is much longer, followed the Destruction, in the Diaspora, where we developed the techniques of survival as a Diaspora people. In the Diaspora, practically speaking, we restricted Judaism to the religious sphere. In terms of our attitude to the foreign authorities, we always learned to bow down, to fold, to forgo, all in order to try and curry favor with the non-Jews. Upon the establishment of the State, we brought with us from the Diaspora those diasporic traits, that embroil us to this day.

Reading her book only reinforced my understanding that the call of the hour is to rid ourselves of the diasporic traits and restore to the stage the true national destiny of every Jew: yes, to be a Jew loyal to the Torah and the commandments, but attaining sovereignty and settlement in all Eretz Yisrael is foremost among our obligations, in order to build in such a state a magnificent and exemplary Jewish society that then will, please  G-d, bring the Redemption.

Interestingly, it is, of all people, our domestic and external enemies who understand the centrality of Eretz Yisrael, much more than a considerable part of our public. The desire to raze the settlement enterprise, the willingness to hand over parts of the homeland to the Arab enemy, the obsessive insistence upon removing meahazim (outposts) that bother nobody, all ensue from a single source: the understanding that it is Jewish sovereignty and settlement in Eretz Yisrael that preserves us as a Jewish people. Our internal and external enemies do not bother us in our observance of Shabbat and kashrut. No, what disturbs them is our being sovereign and independent in our land. And when they want to harm the Jews and try to break them as a people -  they do this by the attempt to sever the Jewish presence in Eretz Yisrael.

Accordingly - and specifically now, when our domestic and external enemies are intensifying their efforts to take from us what sustains us as a Jewish people, namely, more and more parts of Eretz Israel - I would expect the national-religious public, and the Jewish people as a whole, with its rabbis and educators, to engage in the schools, the yeshivot, the ulpanot, the youth movements, the synagogues, and the community centers, not in bringing people back to religion - which is a type of convenient escape to activity that does not bother anyone - but rather in intensifying the topic of the importance of Eretz Israel, our right to it, and our duty to defend it.

I therefore call, here and now, upon our public: put aside the matter of making people religious, especially when there is a public that is already engaged in this. Specifically now, when a sword has been placed on the very existence of the Jewish people in its land (even for those who stand at the back-to-religion stands), we must be primarily occupied with Eretz Yisrael.

Whether this means bringing our brothers from Haifa, Gush Dan till Eilat, for tours in the Judea and Samaria region, in order to remind the people of Israel what are its roots, what is the land of the Patriarchs and what would happen if G-d forbid Israel would be shrunk to the 1967 Aushwitz borders. Whether this means distributing informational material to the youth on our exclusive right to the land, so that the youth who study in (nonreligious) state schools will, at long last, receive information and understand what we are doing here in Eretz Yisrael, why we are not “occupiers,” but the owners of the land, and why we are duty-bound to defend it. Whether this means giving courses to the youth as “know what to answer the enemy” (how is it possible that not a single ulpanah or yeshivah gives a course for contending with the lies and propaganda of Peace Now? Why is only the left active in the universities? Where is the national youth? Why is Bnei Akiva mostly busy with social projects and not with campaigns to settle the Land?) Whether this means starting courses how to establish and build a new settlement (courses for the youth in agriculture, driving tractors, working the land, building houses, electrician courses …). Whether this means mass participation by the public in operations to renew the settlement momentum by establishing settlements, such as those that are in existence since Sukkot - an operation in which thousands participated, and which raised the people’s morale. And whether this means the organization of a movement of opposition to the government’s malicious plans and of defense of the settlements.

To sum up, there is no shortage of Eretz Yisrael activities and ideas to keep us busy, when the true call of the hour, that takes precedence over everything else, is truly Eretz Yisrael.

Even Menahem Ussishkin understood this, when he declared: “When the people of Israel will redeem the Land of Israel, then the Land of Israel will redeem the people of Israel.”

THE BATTLE FOR JERUSALEM - IS IT ALREADY TOO LATE? 0

Letter from Ruth Matar (Women in Green) Jerusalem
Thursday, October 25, 2007
Dear Friends,

On Tuesday, October 23rd, two days ago, Women in Green held a demonstration at Paris Square in Jerusalem, very close to Ehud Olmert’s residence. We held posters and handed out bumper stickers saying: “Olmert is Dangerous for the Jews”, “the Land of Israel Belongs to the People of Israel”, “Jerusalem is not for Sale”, “No to a Palestinian State”, etc.

An elderly gentleman came up to me and said: “I admire you for holding this demo, but I can tell you that, unfortunately, it is not of any use what the World is planning in Annapolis is nothing short of gang rape of Israel. It is already much too late.”

I agree with this elderly gentleman that the present situation is most dangerous for Israel. Our Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, is indeed a threat to the very survival of the Jewish State.

Every day we read about Olmert’s latest concessions to Abbas with regard to Jerusalem, albeit unconfirmed:

1. Dividing Jerusalem into two parts, Jewish and Arab.

2. Handing over complete control over the Temple Mount to the Muslims.

These rumors may be “unconfirmed”, yet many Members of Knesset seem to take them very seriously. More than half of the Knesset members, from both the Opposition and Coalition factions, have already signed a petition against plans to hand over parts of Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority, including giving the Muslims complete control over the Temple Mount.

The Knesset Members are justified in their fear. The Prime Minister asserted earlier this month that he DOES NOT NEED KNESSET APPROVAL TO REACH A JOINT DECLARATION WITH PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY CHAIRMAN MAHMOUD ABBAS.

Olmert’s insistence that there is a natural division between Arab and Jewish Jerusalem is complete fiction.

For many years, Arabs immigrating into Palestine tried to violently drive the Jews out of their homes in the holy city of Jerusalem.

The first large Arab riots took place in Jerusalem in the intermediary days of Passover, April 1920. Six Jews were killed and some 200 injured in the course of these riots. Such unrest and violence continued in Jerusalem for years, resulting in Arabs taking possession of many Jewish homes.

When you next come to Jerusalem, I suggest that you take a guided tour with the “Ateret Cohanim” organization. You will see proof of original Jewish ownership on the doorposts of what are now Arab occupied homes in the so-called “Muslim Quarter”. You can clearly observe a hollow niche where a Jewish Mezuzah was once placed!

Why did Prime Minister Ehud Olmert recently allow Arab bulldozers and other heavy equipment to be used to dig a massive trench on the Temple Mount? The Islamic Waqf custodians claimed the work was necessary to replace electrical cables. Is Prime Minister Olmert really gullible enough to believe this?

In an article by Aaron Klein of WorldNetDaily, posted October 22, 2007 he says that prominent Temple Mount archeologists accused Olmert of attempting to cover up the alleged failure to properly supervise a dig in which Islamic authorities were accused of deliberately destroying Temple Mount antiquities.

Palestinian and Muslim leaders have always routinely denied well-documented Jewish ties to the Temple Mount. Using heavy equipment in order to supposedly replace electrical cables was clearly an attempt to destroy the evidence of the two Jewish Temples!

Why did Olmert not allow the Israeli Antiquities Authority to supervise this dig? Did he not realize that the Arabs were deliberately destroying the evidence that ties the Jews to the Temple Mount?

The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism! We must understand the significance of the Temple Mount to the Jews, and thus the dangers of handing over complete control over it to the Arabs.

The following is a short historical background on the Temple Mount:

Jewish tradition, from its very beginnings, has seen the Temple Mount in Jerusalem as the very center of the universe, the focal point of G-d’s connection to the Jewish people and all of mankind. The Torah relates in Genesis that the near-sacrifice of Isaac took place atop Mount Moriah, which was identified with the Mountain of G-d, the Mountain of pilgrimage that is the Temple Mount.

After King David founded Jerusalem as the capital of the kingdom of Israel, he purchased land with a granary from a Jebusite named Aravna; David’s son Solomon built a magnificent Temple there that stood for 400 years. Solomon’s Temple was designed and built as a permanent shrine on a grand scale, which would replace the Tabernacle that had served the Israelites in the desert, and in various temporary locations within the Promised Land.

Although destroyed by the Babylonians in their conquest of Judea, the Temple was rebuilt by the returning exiles, and served as the center of Jewish spiritual and material life for the next 600 years. In the reign of Herod the Great, near the beginning of the Common Era, the Temple was completely refurbished, while the Temple Mount almost doubled in size all in order to accommodate millions of pilgrims, Jews and non-Jews from all over the known world.

Almost 2000 years have passed since the Romans destroyed the Second Temple; yet committed Jews throughout the centuries, in all the lands of their exile, have prayed in the direction of their ruined Temple. To this day, Jews focus their hopes, dreams and prayers on the speedy rebuilding of the Temple, as the central condition for national and cosmic redemption.

According to the Hebrew poet Uri Zvi Greenberg (1896-1981), “whoever controls the Temple Mount controls the entire land of Israel!”

This is as true today as when Uri Zvi Greenberg originally wrote these lines.

It is imperative that we stop Ehud Olmert from treating our beloved Jerusalem and the rest of the Holy Land as his private real estate!

It is imperative that we make Olmert understand that he cannot barter away Jerusalem and the rest of our Homeland to Chairman Mahmoud Abbas without even Knesset approval!

Going back to the elderly gentleman at the demo two days ago, I agree with him that the Annapolis Conference might well turn into a gang rape of Israel.

However, it is not too late!

We must all work together to prevent a great tragedy!

IN ISRAEL, we must, at all costs, work on removing Olmert from the seat of power, so that he cannot treat Israel as his private real estate.

IN THE UNITED STATES, you, dear friends, must convince President Bush that no part of Israel is for sale!

IT IS NOT TOO LATE!

With Blessings and Love for Israel,

Ruth Matar

Upcoming Activities 0

Dear Friends,

In yesterday’s Parsha (Torah portion) of Lekh-Lekha we read different versions of G-d’s promise to Abram:

In chapter 13 verse 14,15 it says:
“And the Lord said to Abram….,Lift up now thy eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward; for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed forever”.

In chapter 13 verse 17 on the other hand it is written:
“Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it, for I will give it to thee”.

The question arises: how come in one place G-d promises the Land of Israel to Abram and his seed forever and in another place G-d only promises it to Abram.
Simha Raz who wrote a book on the Parshat Hashavua, quotes Rabbi Yaakov Duchinsky who gives the following explanation:

G-d gave the vision and the promise of the land of Israel to Abram and to his seed; i.e. to all the generations to come. But the actual fighting for the Land and the actual physical keeping of the Land has to be repeated by every generation. It is not enough to have the general vision and promise. Every generation will only keep the land if they arise, walk through all of the land, settle it, build it, protect it and work hard to pass it on the next generation, who in its turn will also need to fight to keep it. It is every generation’s duty to do so.

This little Torah explanation is very suitable for what is going on in Israel today.
The past generation has fought to return to the land of Israel, has created the State of Israel, and has settled its Land. But the new generation of Israeli leaders are corrupt and are spitting in the face of all those who paid in blood to return to the Jewish homeland. This corrupt leadership is now planning on giving away to the Arab enemy Israel’s Biblical homeland, including Jerusalem .

It is the obligation of the Jewish people in Israel and abroad to fight against those evil plans which are a direct defiance of G-d’s  commandments.
The struggle has to be for keeping the entire Land of Israel with Jerusalem at its center. It is not enough to focus the struggle around Jerusalem. Yes, Jerusalem is the heart. But the heart beats in a body and that body needs to be healthy and strong. In the struggle against the Annapolis Conference the outcry and outrage must be  about the entire Land of Israel. The message must be: NOT ONE INCH!!! We do not agree to give away even a millimeter of the Land of Israel, not in Judea, not in Samaria and not in Jerusalem for the entire Land of Israel belongs to the People of Israel.

Women in Green call upon all to take part in the different activities, in Israel and abroad, that will take place in the next few weeks to prevent the Annapolis Conference disaster.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd, 2007 at 10:00am
JERUSALEM, PARIS SQUARE (in front of Prime Minister’s Olmert residence)
Women in Green will hold a vigil under the banner:
“OLMERT IS DANGEROUS FOR THE JEWS”
We will hand out bumper stickers that say “Olmert is dangerous for the Jews” and “The land of Israel belongs to the People of Israel”.

We encourage our friends in Israel and abroad to organize such vigils in your areas too. Send us by email your name, and full address and we will send you the bumper stickers by mail. If you organize a vigil in your area, tell us about it and we will post the details so others can join.

According to all the polls, the majority of the Israeli People oppose Olmert’s plans. But it is not enough to read about this in the polls. We must create an atmosphere in the country against Olmert, against the creation of a PLO state and in favor of keeping the Land of Israel in Jewish hands. That will only succeed if each and one of us agrees to take some time out of their daily schedule and will agree to stand at major intersections holding posters and handing out bumper stickers and material. The more of an anti-Olmert atmosphere we manage to create, the more successful our protests can become.

With Love of Israel,
Ruth and Nadia Matar

Letter to President Bush 0

October 18, 2007

Dear President Bush,

I am taking the liberty of writing you this personal letter because I fear you have put the State of Israel in a most dangerous, life-threatening situation. You have achieved this both by your June 24, 2002, policy speech, and by your planned “Peace Conference”, to be held in Annapolis, Maryland.

I have spent many sleepless nights since your speech on June 24, 2002, when you first declared your vision of dividing Israel into two states; a Jewish one, and an Arab state carved out of Jewish Biblical land.

IN YOUR JUNE 24, 2002, POLICY SPEECH you declared:
“My vision is two states, living side-by-side, in peace and security.”
You also stated that it is untenable for Palestinians to live in squalor and OCCUPATION.

Mr. President, your “vision” is based on a faulty premise. Israel is not occupying Arab territory! On the contrary: LARGE PARTS OF ISRAEL ARE OCCUPIED BY THE ARABS.

The Arab claim that the country was theirs and was taken away from them by the Jews is completely false and lacks any historic basis.

The following is a short summary of Israel’s history:

Israel became a nation in 1312 B.C.E., i.e. 2,000 years BEFORE the rise of Islam, and long before there was any Arab nation. Israel (Palestine) has been the homeland of the Jewish People since biblical times. It was subsequently “occupied” more than 15 times. Among its occupiers were the Egyptians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, and the Ottoman Turks. The longest occupiers of the Holy Land who ruled on and off for 400 yearsbetween 1517-1917were the Ottoman Turks. They were followed by the British who ruled under a Mandate of the League of Nations (later the U.N.) to renew a homeland for the Jewish People.

Jews had dominion over the land of Israel over 1,300 years before their expulsion by the conquering Roman Empire. Moreover, Jews have had a continuous presence in this land for over 3,300 years.

As for your planned, so-called “Peace Conference”, to be held in Annapolis, Maryland, which you announced on July 16 of this year, you seem to have stacked the cards unfairly against Israel.

You have invited all your Arab friends, and in addition, only countries who have declared themselves to be in favor of a TWO STATE SOLUTION.

What then, remains to be discussed at the Conference?

Your plan is to have your Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, chair this Conference. It is well known that Ms. Rice is no friend of Israel.

For example, at her Senate confirmation hearing as US Secretary of State, Rice stated: “If I am confirmed, I will be especially honored to succeed a man I so admire- my friend and mentor, Colin Powell.”
Colin Powell, Secretary of State during your first term, famously described Yasser Arafat to a US Senate committee as follows: “One man’s Terrorist is another man’s Freedom Fighter.”

In addition, James Baker, your father’s Secretary of State, of “F-ck the Jews” fame, is one of Rice’s best friends. They have many common interests and attitudes.

To top it all, Chevron Oil Company, one of the ten largest oil companies in the world, named one of their giant tankers “Condoleezza Rice” in honor of her dedicated service. As you may remember, many critics complained at the time, that the ship served as a giant floating symbol of your administration’s cozy ties to the oil industry.

No wonder then, that the Israeli People are wary of the upcoming Conference, which Ehud Olmert has agreed to attend on behalf of the country he supposedly represents. (This man is currently under a number of criminal investigations!) At this Conference there will be a preponderance of Arab nations. Prime Minister Olmert has foolishly accepted the invitation. Does he not realize Israel is slated to be the sacrificial lamb?

President Bush, it is only fair that the person writing this letter identify herself. I am an elderly lady, who will, God willing, celebrate my 78th Birthday at the end of this month.

I am a Holocaust survivor, born in Austria. I escaped the Nazi death machine when my parents succeeded in having me accepted on a Kinder Transport to Sweden, just a month before the outbreak of World War Two. (My cousins were not as fortunate, and are believed to have died in a concentration camp).

My parents were able to escape Austria by crossing the border to Italy. At the end of the war they were part of the group of one thousand survivors who President Roosevelt allowed to enter the United States. Our family was miraculously united in the US, where we subsequently became American citizens.

I received my higher education, from age seventeen through college, in the United States. I met and married an American Jewish lawyer who had served in the American Army throughout the war. After the War, he attended Wisconsin University and Yale Law School on the G.I. Bill.

My husband and I have four children and seventeen grandchildren. We currently live in Jerusalem, Israel. We consider the United States as our homeland. At the same time, as religious Jews, we feel that Israel is our spiritual homeland, promised to us Hebrews by the Almighty G-d as an everlasting inheritance.

From my perspective as a Holocaust survivor, I fear that my children and grandchildren are not safe from another Holocaust.

The current situation frightens me more than I can describe in words.
Iran is about to acquire the atom bomb and President Ahmedinejad repeatedly states his intention to wipe Israel off the map.

At this point I must tell you, President Bush, that I voted for you both in the election of 2000, and in the election of 2004. At that time, I worked hard on my popular weekly English radio program from Israel, (INN: Israel National News), to recruit the American absentee vote on your behalf. My program was mainly directed to American audiences. I was fortunate to be able to interview many interesting prominent Americans such as James Woolsey, foreign policy specialist and former Director of Central Intelligence and head of the Central Intelligence Agency.

In light of all this, I implore you, Mr. President: Do not divide the Holy Land!

I truly believe that such an act on your part will have the most dangerous repercussions for Israel, the United States, and in fact, the entire western civilization, whose values and belief system are based on our common Holy Bible.

I believe that you truly wish to promote Peace in the Middle East.
However, dividing the Holy Land will have the exact opposite effect.

We cannot hide from ourselves the fact that Mahmoud Abbas, who you are promoting as Prime Minister of this new theoretical Arab State, is a former well known terrorist who co-founded the PLO together with Yasser Arafat. We must also face the fact that his terrorist Fatah Organization has murdered many more Jews than even Hamas! To this day, Abbas denies that there ever was a Holocaust, a view shared by Iran’s President, Ahmedinejad.

We must keep in mind Mahmoud Abbas’ educational background. He graduated from the University of Damascus, Syria, and subsequently earned his Ph.D degree at the Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow. Both these institutions are known for their hatred of Israel. Abbas’ thesis was, in fact, about Holocaust denial. His dissertation was entitled: “The Secret Connection between the Nazis and the Leaders of the Zionist Movement”.

Abu Daoud was one of the terrorists intimately involved in the planning of the Munich Massacre of Israeli athletes in the 1972 Olympics. Daoud alleged in his autobiography that Mahmoud Abbas was the main paymaster behind the attack.

Mr. President, do you really plan for this terrorist to be Israel’s peace partner?

There are many Israelis and Americans, both Jews and Christians, who feel that your Conference will have a strong anti-Israel component, and therefore will result in a harmful outcome for the Jewish State.

You have yet to announce the final-final date for your Conference. We hope that you give us the courtesy of notifying the public as to when it will be held, so that we can finalize our own preparations. We plan to hold a Zionist Conference in New York preceding your Annapolis Conference by a few days.

In conclusion, I would like to quote Oklahoma Senator Inhofe’s Senate Floor Statement of March 4, 2002, entitled “SEVEN REASONS WHY ISRAEL IS ENTITLED TO THE LAND”:

“Reason Number 7:  I believe very strongly that we ought to support Israel; that it has a right to the land. This is the most important reason:
BECAUSE G-D SAID SO.”

Respectfully Yours,

Ruth Matar

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING “BIBLICALLY CORRECT” 0

Letter from Ruth Matar (Women in Green) Jerusalem
Thursday, October 11, 2007
Dear Friends of Israel,

Why is President George W. Bush so hell-bent on the upcoming regional “Peace Conference” in Annapolis, Maryland, dealing with the Palestinian-Israeli issue? (“Hell-bent” seems an excellent choice of words!)

Of course, he is anxious to bring all his Arab friends together under one happy roof, with the objective of dealing with the thorny problem of the existence of the State of Israel. Subsequently, other like-minded world leaders are to be invited as well.

The United States planned a massive aid package for the region. Even Saudi Arabia was included, even though the Saudis aren’t exactly doing the United States’s bidding in Iraq. The U.S. feels that it badly needs friends in the region to cement a new alliance of U.S. regional buddies.

The following is an excerpt from Herb Keinon’s article: “Diplomacy: Dangerous Liaisons?” published in the Jerusalem Post on August 10, 2007.

“On July 16, when Bush gave birth to the idea of a regional conference, he kept everything intentionally vague. “The world can do more to build the conditions for peace,” he said. “So I will call together an international meeting this fall of representatives from nations that support a TWO-STATE SOLUTION, reject violence, recognize Israel’s right to exist and commit to all previous agreements between the parties. The key participants in this meeting will be the Israelis, the Palestinians, and their neighbors in the region. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will chair the meeting. She and her counterparts will review the progress that has been made toward building Palestinian institutions. They will look for innovative and effective ways to support further reform. And they will provide diplomatic support for the parties in their bilateral discussions and negotiations, so that we can move forward on a successful path to a Palestinian state.” …

The problem with the conference, said Eric Cantor, a Republican from Virginia, who led a group of 19 congressmen during talks with top-tier Israeli and Palestinian leaders this week, is with all the noise it is already generating. “I’m very concerned about the expectations surrounding such a conference,” he said in an interview. “I believe that it is wise for us to stick to the sequential nature of the original Road Map, and the vision of our president in insisting that any Palestinian state wait for the Palestinians to denounce terrorist violence, to recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and to recognize all former agreements entered into by the PA. For me, calling for a regional conference at this point, without demonstrable evidence that those prerequisites are taking place, may cause an elevation of expectations that could be damaging.”

The idea that Israel could be dealt with to the satisfaction of the Arab states in the Middle East has grown ever since President Bush’s speech on June 24, 2002. At that time he spoke about his idea of two states; a Jewish one, and an Arab state carved out of Jewish land. He further said:

“It is untenable for Palestinians to live in squalor and OCCUPATION.”

“In the situation the Palestinian people will grow more and more miserable. MY VISION IS TWO STATES, LIVING SIDE BY SIDE IN PEACE AND SECURITY.” (The entire speech by President Bush is attached at the end of this Letter.)

Dear Friends, let’s stop right here! President Bush’s “vision” is based on a faulty premise: Bush labors under the assumption that ISRAEL is occupying ARAB territory. He, as many others, is deceived by the Arab “big-lie” technique!

Women in Green had sponsored an ad in the Jerusalem Post on April 19, 2002 approximately 2 months before Bush’s fateful speech on June 24 of that year, entitled: “ISRAEL IS OCCUPIED TERRITORY OCCUPIED BY THE ARABS!”

The Arab claim that the country was theirs and was taken away from them by the Jews is completely false and lacks any historic basis.

This history as published in the ad:

“Israel became a nation in 1312 B.C.E., i.e.

Moreover, Jews have had a continuous presence in this land for over 3,300 years.”

How sad that nobody was able to rectify Bush’s misconception on who is occupying whom, on that fateful day of his June 24, 2002 speech. Now, five years later, is it too late to change Bush’s mind on this crucial issue?

Those who strive to be “politically correct” about the Jewish-Arab conflict want to deny Jews to build communities on their own land. This is in spite of the fact that the commandment of settling Eretz Yisrael is equivalent in its importance to all the commandments of the Torah.

In the name of the Lord who commands us (Deuteronomy 1:8): “Go, take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.”

However, President Bush insists on being completely “biblically not correct” on this matter. He demands that Israel evacuates all its settlements built since 2001, and that they not build any new communities whatsoever. In effect, he dares to challenge the very authority of the Master of the Universe!

On this topic of settlement, you will be interested to read an essay by Joseph Farah, an Arab American who is the head of WorldNetDaily, entitled: “THE ‘SETTLEMENTS’ ISSUE”. You will find his full article at the end of this Letter.

For those of us who love the Holy Land, it is important not to fall into the trap of striving to be “politically correct”. On the contrary, as bible believers, it behooves us to be NOT “politically correct”, but sincerely “biblically correct”. This means that we firmly believe the word of G-d that the Holy Land is an everlasting inheritance of the Jewish People.

Unfortunately, Ehud Olmert, our current Prime Minister, as well as Ariel Sharon, the previous Prime Minister of Israel, is not at all concerned with being “biblically correct”. Those two, together, expelled ten thousand Jews from their homes in Gaza and Northern Shomron. They thereafter permitted the Arabs to take over this Jewish Land.

Ehud Olmert and his Foreign Minister, Tzippi Livni, are eager to give up Judea and Samaria, and even part of Jerusalem, to the Arabs, for promises of “peace”.

It has been said by many analysts that Ariel Sharon, who was considered to be the “father of Jewish settlement”, made a 180 degree political turnaround in order to avert attention from his legal difficulties, i.e. the “Greek Island Affair”. Similarly, Ehud Olmert is currently being questioned by the Israeli Police under caution, regarding his questionable real estate dealings.

These facts are more than worrisome, since Olmert deems himself to be entitled to treat Israel as his private real estate.

With this background, the thought of the November International Peace Conference in Annapolis, Maryland, is most frightening.

We don’t even know, as yet, how many nations have been invited, but certainly there will be a preponderance of Arab nations. Israel has been invited as well, and Olmert has foolishly accepted the invitation to be the sacrificial lamb.

This whole development brings to mind the prophecy of Joel:

“For behold, in those days and at that time, when I will bring back the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all of the nations and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat and I will contend with them there concerning My people and My possession, Israel, that they dispersed among the nations, and they divided up my land.”
(Joel 4:1-3 the Stone Edition of the Tanach)

This prophecy bears an uncanny resemblance to what is being planned by the nations of the world against the Jewish People at this point in time.

What are we to do to show our love and loyalty towards Israel?

We certainly cannot afford to sit back and rely on G-d’s immediate intervention. We must first show that we are worthy of his help!

In the final analysis, as long as we do our utmost to foil these evil plans, we count on G-d’s fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy!

So what can we do, in practical terms?

1. Organize a giant demonstration in Annapolis, Maryland, where this politically correct, anti-Israel “Peace Conference” is scheduled to be held.

2. Organize our own parallel, simultaneous, “biblically correct” conference, at a near-by venue, inviting all bible believing Jews and Christians from all over the world to participate.

President Bush has not yet set a final date for the conference. We will keep you updated so that we can make plans together.

In conclusion, I would like to quote Oklahoma Senator Inhofe’s Senate Floor Statement of March 4, 2002, entitled “SEVEN REASONS WHY ISRAEL IS ENTITLED TO THE LAND”:

“Number 7:  I believe very strongly that we ought to support Israel; that it has a right to the land. This is the most important reason: BECAUSE G-D SAID SO.”

With Blessings and Love for Israel,

Ruth Matar

P.S. Thank G-d for the two G’s: my research assistant, Gila, and Google! We were able to obtain both President Bush’s entire June 24, 2002 speech and Joseph Farah’s article “The ‘Settlements’ Issue”.

President Bush Calls for New Palestinian Leadership
June 24, 2002
The Rose Garden

THE PRESIDENT: For too long, the citizens of the Middle East have lived in the midst of death and fear. The hatred of a few holds the hopes of many hostage. The forces of extremism and terror are attempting to kill progress and peace by killing the innocent. And this casts a dark shadow over an entire region. For the sake of all humanity, things must change in the Middle East.

It is untenable for Israeli citizens to live in terror. It is untenable for Palestinians to live in squalor and occupation. And the current situation offers no prospect that life will improve. Israeli citizens will continue to be victimized by terrorists, and so Israel will continue to defend herself.

In the situation the Palestinian people will grow more and more miserable. My vision is two states, living side by side in peace and security. There is simply no way to achieve that peace until all parties fight terror. Yet, at this critical moment, if all parties will break with the past and set out on a new path, we can overcome the darkness with the light of hope. Peace requires a new and different Palestinian leadership, so that a Palestinian state can be born.

I call on the Palestinian people to elect new leaders, leaders not compromised by terror. I call upon them to build a practicing democracy, based on tolerance and liberty. If the Palestinian people actively pursue these goals, America and the world will actively support their efforts. If the Palestinian people meet these goals, they will be able to reach agreement with Israel and Egypt and Jordan on security and other arrangements for independence.

And when the Palestinian people have new leaders, new institutions and new security arrangements with their neighbors, the United States of America will support the creation of a Palestinian state whose borders and certain aspects of its sovereignty will be provisional until resolved as part of a final settlement in the Middle East.

In the work ahead, we all have responsibilities. The Palestinian people are gifted and capable, and I am confident they can achieve a new birth for their nation. A Palestinian state will never be created by terror — it will be built through reform. And reform must be more than cosmetic change, or veiled attempt to preserve the status quo. True reform will require entirely new political and economic institutions, based on democracy, market economics and action against terrorism.

Today, the elected Palestinian legislature has no authority, and power is concentrated in the hands of an unaccountable few. A Palestinian state can only serve its citizens with a new constitution which separates the powers of government. The Palestinian parliament should have the full authority of a legislative body. Local officials and government ministers need authority of their own and the independence to govern effectively.

The United States, along with the European Union and Arab states, will work with Palestinian leaders to create a new constitutional framework, and a working democracy for the Palestinian people. And the United States, along with others in the international community will help the Palestinians organize and monitor fair, multi-party local elections by the end of the year, with national elections to follow.

Today, the Palestinian people live in economic stagnation, made worse by official corruption. A Palestinian state will require a vibrant economy, where honest enterprise is encouraged by honest government. The United States, the international donor community and the World Bank stand ready to work with Palestinians on a major project of economic reform and development. The United States, the EU, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund are willing to oversee reforms in Palestinian finances, encouraging transparency and independent auditing.

And the United States, along with our partners in the developed world, will increase our humanitarian assistance to relieve Palestinian suffering. Today, the Palestinian people lack effective courts of law and have no means to defend and vindicate their rights. A Palestinian state will require a system of reliable justice to punish those who prey on the innocent. The United States and members of the international community stand ready to work with Palestinian leaders to establish finance — establish finance and monitor a truly independent judiciary.

Today, Palestinian authorities are encouraging, not opposing, terrorism. This is unacceptable. And the United States will not support the establishment of a Palestinian state until its leaders engage in a sustained fight against the terrorists and dismantle their infrastructure. This will require an externally supervised effort to rebuild and reform the Palestinian security services. The security system must have clear lines of authority and accountability and a unified chain of command.

America is pursuing this reform along with key regional states. The world is prepared to help, yet ultimately these steps toward statehood depend on the Palestinian people and their leaders. If they energetically take the path of reform, the rewards can come quickly. If Palestinians embrace democracy, confront corruption and firmly reject terror, they can count on American support for the creation of a provisional state of Palestine.

With a dedicated effort, this state could rise rapidly, as it comes to terms with Israel, Egypt and Jordan on practical issues, such as security. The final borders, the capital and other aspects of this state’s sovereignty will be negotiated between the parties, as part of a final settlement. Arab states have offered their help in this process, and their help is needed.

I’ve said in the past that nations are either with us or against us in the war on terror. To be counted on the side of peace, nations must act. Every leader actually committed to peace will end incitement to violence in official media, and publicly denounce homicide bombings. Every nation actually committed to peace will stop the flow of money, equipment and recruits to terrorist groups seeking the destruction of Israel — including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah. Every nation actually committed to peace must block the shipment of Iranian supplies to these groups, and oppose regimes that promote terror, like Iraq. And Syria must choose the right side in the war on terror by closing terrorist camps and expelling terrorist organizations.

Leaders who want to be included in the peace process must show by their deeds an undivided support for peace. And as we move toward a peaceful solution, Arab states will be expected to build closer ties of diplomacy and commerce with Israel, leading to full normalization of relations between Israel and the entire Arab world.

Israel also has a large stake in the success of a democratic Palestine. Permanent occupation threatens Israel’s identity and democracy. A stable, peaceful Palestinian state is necessary to achieve the security that Israel longs for. So I challenge Israel to take concrete steps to support the emergence of a viable, credible Palestinian state.

As we make progress towards security, Israel forces need to withdraw fully to positions they held prior to September 28, 2000. And consistent with the recommendations of the Mitchell Committee, Israeli settlement activity in the occupied territories must stop.

The Palestinian economy must be allowed to develop. As violence subsides, freedom of movement should be restored, permitting innocent Palestinians to resume work and normal life. Palestinian legislators and officials, humanitarian and international workers, must be allowed to go about the business of building a better future. And Israel should release frozen Palestinian revenues into honest, accountable hands.

I’ve asked Secretary Powell to work intensively with Middle Eastern and international leaders to realize the vision of a Palestinian state, focusing them on a comprehensive plan to support Palestinian reform and institution-building.

Ultimately, Israelis and Palestinians must address the core issues that divide them if there is to be a real peace, resolving all claims and ending the conflict between them. This means that the Israeli occupation that began in 1967 will be ended through a settlement negotiated between the parties, based on U.N. Resolutions 242 and 338, with Israeli withdrawal to secure and recognize borders.

We must also resolve questions concerning Jerusalem, the plight and future of Palestinian refugees, and a final peace between Israel and Lebanon, and Israel and a Syria that supports peace and fights terror.

All who are familiar with the history of the Middle East realize that there may be setbacks in this process. Trained and determined killers, as we have seen, want to stop it. Yet the Egyptian and Jordanian peace treaties with Israel remind us that with determined and responsible leadership progress can come quickly.

As new Palestinian institutions and new leaders emerge, demonstrating real performance on security and reform, I expect Israel to respond and work toward a final status agreement. With intensive effort by all, this agreement could be reached within three years from now. And I and my country will actively lead toward that goal.

I can understand the deep anger and anguish of the Israeli people. You’ve lived too long with fear and funerals, having to avoid markets and public transportation, and forced to put armed guards in kindergarten classrooms. The Palestinian Authority has rejected your offer at hand, and trafficked with terrorists. You have a right to a normal life; you have a right to security; and I deeply believe that you need a reformed, responsible Palestinian partner to achieve that security.

I can understand the deep anger and despair of the Palestinian people. For decades you’ve been treated as pawns in the Middle East conflict. Your interests have been held hostage to a comprehensive peace agreement that never seems to come, as your lives get worse year by year. You deserve democracy and the rule of law. You deserve an open society and a thriving economy. You deserve a life of hope for your children. An end to occupation and a peaceful democratic Palestinian state may seem distant, but America and our partners throughout the world stand ready to help, help you make them possible as soon as possible.

If liberty can blossom in the rocky soil of the West Bank and Gaza, it will inspire millions of men and women around the globe who are equally weary of poverty and oppression, equally entitled to the benefits of democratic government.

I have a hope for the people of Muslim countries. Your commitments to morality, and learning, and tolerance led to great historical achievements. And those values are alive in the Islamic world today. You have a rich culture, and you share the aspirations of men and women in every culture. Prosperity and freedom and dignity are not just American hopes, or Western hopes. They are universal, human hopes. And even in the violence and turmoil of the Middle East, America believes those hopes have the power to transform lives and nations.

This moment is both an opportunity and a test for all parties in the Middle East: an opportunity to lay the foundations for future peace; a test to show who is serious about peace and who is not. The choice here is stark and simple. The Bible says, “I have set before you life and death; therefore, choose life.” The time has arrived for everyone in this conflict to choose peace, and hope, and life.

Thank you very much.

THE ‘SETTLEMENTS’ ISSUE
By Joseph Farah
WorldNetDaily, December 12, 2002

Once again, we’re hearing that awful word again in the context of the Middle East debate.

“Settlements.”

That’s what the conflict is all about, we’re being told. That’s why the Arabs are mad at the Israelis. That’s the root of the violence, the terrorism, the hatred.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer raised the ugly specter of “settlement” recently in a speech last week. Kurtzer, the former ambassador to Egypt and one of the architects of the failed peace process, once again blamed Israel as an obstacle to peace.

“Israeli settlement activity cripples chances for real peace,” he said. He also underlined with emphasis and a pregnant pause this conclusion: “Settlement activity must stop.”

What about these “settlements”? What are they? Why are they bad? Why should they be stopped?

I think most Americans and most non-Israelis draw certain mental pictures when they hear this term. I know I did before I began visiting “settlements” in Israel. I discovered they were not armed camps. They were not frontier outposts in alien territory. They were not fortresses built to grab more land for Jews. No. Much to my surprise, I found these “settlements” to be nothing more than communities – peaceful Jewish communities that don’t interfere with nor abrogate anyone else’s rights. They reminded me of suburban developments in Southern California more than threats to peace.

The word “settlement” itself is loaded. Who is a “settler” in the Mideast? According to the Arabs, only Jews are “settlers.” But that simply is not the case.

Arafat himself was born in Egypt. He later moved to Jerusalem. If, at the moment, he is living in the West Bank, he is a “settler” there, not a native. Indeed, most of the Arabs living within the borders of Israel today have come from some other Arab country at some time in their life. They are all “settlers.”

For instance, just since the beginning of the Oslo Accords, hundreds of thousands of Arabs have entered the West Bank or Gaza – and never left. They have come from Jordan, Egypt and, indirectly, from every other Arab country you can name – and many non-Arab countries as well. These surely aren’t “Palestinians.”

Since 1967, the Arabs have built 261 settlements in the West Bank. We don’t hear much about those settlements. We hear instead about the number of Jewish settlements that have been created. We hear how destabilizing they are – how provocative they are. Yet, by comparison, only 144 Jewish settlements have been built since 1967 – including those surrounding Jerusalem, in the West Bank and in Gaza. Why is it that only Jewish construction is destabilizing?

The Arab “settlement” activity is not new. This has always been the case. Arabs have been flocking to Israel ever since it was created – and even before, coinciding with the wave of Jewish immigration into Palestine prior to 1948.

And that raises a question I never hear anyone ask: If Israel’s policies make life so intolerable for Arabs, why do they continue to flock to the Jewish state? Why aren’t they leaving in droves if conditions are as bad as they say?

The truth? There is more freedom under Israeli rule than there is in any Arab country. If you’re a headstrong Arab, bent on protest, this is the place to be. Don’t try throwing stones at Syrian police. You won’t live long. Don’t try publishing anti-kingdom newspapers in Saudi Arabia. You won’t live long. Don’t try fomenting revolutionary jihadism in Egypt. You won’t live long.

So, sooner or later, those who are determined to protest, the professional agitators, the future Arafats of the Arab world all come to Israel. The Arab world is happy to be rid of them. This exodus serves two purposes – limiting the threat to Arab regimes and fanning the uniting flames of anti-Israel hatred. It’s a population safety valve the totalitarian Arab world just loves.

Prior to 1900, the entire region was a barren wasteland with low populations of Jews, Muslims and Christians. No one had much interest in the Holy Land, as Mark Twain pointed out in his own travels to the area – until the Jews began to return.

Then the economic activity began. The jobs were created. The opportunities appeared. And then the Arabs came.

The “settlement” issue is a canard. It’s a propaganda ploy to suggest that only Jews are newcomers to the region. The truth is there are lots of “settlers” and would-be “settlers” in the area – including Arafat and his friends.

By the way, under the Oslo Accords, there are no restrictions whatsoever on Israeli construction in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. None. Zip. Nada. Zilch. These “settlements” are perfectly legal. And I, for one, can see no legitimate reason for them to stop.
